Air Transat – A330-300 – Engine Failure on Takeoff Run

2018-05-03
C-GTSD, an Airbus A330-300 aircraft operated by Air Transat, was conducting flight TSC323 from London/Gatwick, UK (EGKK) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson Intl, ON (CYYZ) with 11 crew members
and 326 passengers on board. As the aircraft was accelerating past 100 kts during the take-off run, the flight crew heard a bang, which was followed with a yaw. A few seconds later, another bang was heard which was also associated with another yaw. The flight crew rejected the takeoff and stopped the aircraft on the runway. A number 2 ENGINE FAIL ECAM message appeared shortly after, followed by ENGINE STALL. ECAM action was executed, the flight crew shut the engine down, and ATC reported that there was black smoke coming out of the engine. As a precaution, the flight crew discharged the engine 2 fire bottle. ARFF inspected the aircraft and found no damage. The aircraft then taxied to the gate.
The operator is currently investigating the incident.
