Canada’s air force is embarking on a pair of initiatives aimed at attracting new recruits for key positions.
The first is the adoption into regular force employment of the Air Operations Support Technician (AOS Tech). This position was previously available only in the reserve force. After their initial training, the AOS Techs will perform tasks including aircraft startup and parking, towing, fuelling, inspections and assisting with scheduled maintenance and repairs. As the Techs gain experience, they can progress to positions in such areas as quality management, aircraft maintenance control and records, project management and other similar and related positions. AOS techs can be expected to be assigned wherever RCAF aircraft are based.
The second initiative announced is an expansion of the paid education entry plans that already exist for technicians following two different career paths: aviation systems technicians and avionics systems technicians. Newly included in this plan is the position of Aircraft Structures Technician (ACS Tech).
Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP) covers tuition and related expenses such as tools and PPE. Students accepted into the plan earn a salary. NCMSTEP is available at 14 colleges across Canada.
“Getting the word out on Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) career opportunities is a priority for us,” said Colonel Lisa Reimer, Director of Air Personnel Strategy. “We have created a dedicated Attractions Team to work with our partners in recruiting and other stakeholders to find innovative ways to draw Canadians and permanent residents to the RCAF. This includes optimizing available recruiting incentives to attract new aviators. The NCMSTEP is one of the programs that we are leveraging to do just that.”
Aviator Isaac Netherton is currently enrolled as a student at London, Ontario’s Fanshawe College. “It was a great experience having my Aunt Lisa enrol me into the Royal Canadian Air Force,” he said. “I’ve been enjoying the aircraft maintenance program…and I’m grateful for all that the Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan has to offer. I encourage anyone looking to get a head start on their career to consider it.”
