The Ottawa International Airport authority has implemented a new instrument approach procedure for particular low-visibility situations. Referred to as the Instrument Landing System Special Authorization CAT II (ILS SA CAT II) procedures, Nav Canada says it is the first such system in Canada.
The system allows for aircraft suitably equipped and operated by trained pilots to continue approaches to lower minimums. Nav Canada worked in close cooperation with the airport authority, and they provided specialized training for their air traffic controllers.
Participants in the project have calculated that an average of 24.5 hours of additional airport operational availability will be added each year thanks to the new procedures.
According to Transport Canada, key details of SA CAT II approaches include:
- Decision Height (DH): 100 feet (30 metres) minimum.
- Runway Visual Range (RVR): As low as 1,200 feet (approx. 350 metres).
- Equipment Required: Requires an approved automatic landing (Autoland) system or a Head-Up Guidance System (HGS).
- Facility Approval: Can be conducted at designated Category I certified aerodrome facilities with special operational approval
