Calgary’s airport authority (Calgary Airports) announced on Wednesday (Sep. 9) the breaking of ground for the next phase of their YYC AeroNex project, the Alberta Training Centre of Excellence for Aviation and Aerospace. Occupying a purpose-built facility, it will train pilots and cabin crew. Calgary Airports said in a press release that they will build the centre by 2028.
CAE of Montreal will design develop and operate eight full-flight simulators which, along with other equipment, will be able to provide initial and recurrent training for the Boeing 737MAX, 737NG, 787 and De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft. Partners in the project include WestJet and Mount Royal University.
“This facility brings together the best in aviation technology, innovation, education and infrastructure under one roof,” Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of Calgary Airports said. “It builds on Calgary and Alberta as a growing hub of aviation, aerospace and logistics, and creates a pathway for possibility in this sector through training, development and research.”
The airport authority will invest $40 million to construct the 135,000-square-foot building, with the training centre leasing half of it. A tenant for the other half is yet to be announced.

YYC AeroNex is an initiative by the airport to develop real estate dedicated to support the growth of the aviation industry in Calgary. Federal and provincial funding has also been invested in the project.
Lufthansa Technik, an aircraft engine repair, overhaul and test facility, began construction of their facility in 2025.
