The first RCAF Lightning II to come off the assembly line took off on its first flight this week (Sept. 23) from a U.S. military base in Fort Worth, Texas. The base is the site where manufacturer Lockheed Martin’s production centre is located. Accompanying it was an American F-35C, provided as a safety observer.
This fifth-generation fighter jet, construction number AR-1, is the first of 88 that were ordered in 2023 to replace the four-decades-old fleet of CF-18 Hornets. However, only 16 have been paid for and are confirmed for delivery to the RCAF. The remaining 72 are still subject to purchase confirmation by the Canadian government as it reconsiders its earlier decision in light of deteriorating relations with the United States.
AR-1 will relocate to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona where the training of RCAF pilots will take place. Actual delivery of the aircraft to Canada is forecast to take place in 2028 pending completion of necessary infrastructure in Canada. Initial Operational Capability is planned for 2029-2030.
