Federal MP for Kelowna Stephen Fuhr was at Kelowna’s airport (YLW) on September 28 to announce federal funding of up to $24.4 million to support the construction of infrastructure required for the expansion of airport industrial lands on the east side of YLW’s single north-south runway, referred to as the East Lands.
The grant will be drawn from the fed’s Build Communities Strong Fund, as opposed to a fund more directly linked to airport infrastructure improvement, such as the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), which is meant for specific airport infrastructure upgrades and improvements.
“The Kelowna International Airport is already a major economic engine for our region,” said Fuhr, who is also the Secretary of State for Defence Procurement. “This investment will unlock valuable airport lands, attract new investment and aerospace companies and create skilled Canadian jobs. We’re strengthening Kelowna’s economy while creating new opportunities for Canada’s aerospace industry to grow, right here in the Okanagan.”
Kelowna airport is Canada’s 9th busiest and British Columbia’s 2nd busiest, handling over 2.1 million passengers per year, and is the country’s largest municipally owned and operated airport.
