RCN Now Flying Helicopters

The Royal Canadian Navy is about to equip its ships with uncrewed helicopters. Last month the navy conducted its inaugural flight of a CU179 Peregrine at the Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental Test Ranges (CFMETR) at Nanoose Bay, near Nanaimo, British Columbia.

The Peregrine is based on the Camcopter S-100 helicopter drone, developed by Austrian company Schiebel. The RCN’s version is equipped with special sensors and long-range radar and can carry specialized military payloads.

The Peregrines will initially be integrated on board Halifax-class frigates and then the new River-class destroyers when they enter service. This will allow surveillance beyond the ship’s horizon. The Peregrines will also support search and rescue operations.
