Police and Transport Canada are investigating after a paramedic on an Ornge medevac helicopter took a laser strike to the eye as the helicopter was landing at a Niagara Falls fire station. The green laser hit the paramedic as the patient was being transferred to an ambulance to go to a local hospital. The transfer wasn’t delayed and the condition of the paramedic wasn’t immediately known.
The authorities have a good idea where the laser came from and if they find the person responsible it will be a life changing event. If convicted under the Aeronautics Act for intentionally interfering with an aircraft by using a laser he or she could face penalties of $100,000 in fines and/or up to five years in prison.
