Jazz Aviation – Bombardier DHC-8-402 – Propeller Malfunction

2018-04-30

C-GJZR, a Bombardier DHC-8-402 aircraft operated by Jazz Aviation LP, was conducting flight JZA8284 from Timmins (Victor M. Power), ON (CYTS) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson Intl, ON (CYYZ). During the climb out from CYTS through 6500 feet ASL, the number 1 propeller RPM decreased to 850, which was followed by a master caution light. The propeller RPM then increased to 1060, an over speed condition, and the flight crew followed QRH procedures. The
engine (Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150A) was shut down, a PAN PAN was declared and the flight crew requested to return to CYTS where the aircraft landed uneventfully with ARFF standing by.
The operator’s maintenance replaced the propeller PCU and, following operational checks, the aircraft was returned to service.
