Following calls for government help to allow De Havilland Canada (DHC) to meet demand for its Canadair 515 water bomber, DHC announced last Friday (Oct. 30) that its lobbying efforts have been somewhat successful. The federal government, together with Export Development Canada (EDC, a Crown corporation), will provide up to $2.5 billion in financing to expand DHC’s production capacity and allow for a doubling of its Canadair 515 output. Two weeks ago, we reported on those lobbying efforts.

The company has seen unprecedented international demand for its waterbomber, also known as the Super Scooper. Recent widespread wildfire activity, especially in Europe, has seen orders mount. DHC was fearful that without expanded production capacity, other aircraft manufacturers would enter the market. At least two French companies are working on aerial tanker designs.
The new financing will allow DHC to hire additional staff and increase production capacity at its facilities in Victoria, Calgary, Toronto, Kitchener and Fort Erie.
