The National Championship Air Races scheduled for September 13 to 17 of this year will be the last at the Reno/Stead airport in Nevada. In an open letter issued Friday (March 10), the organizer’s board of directors cited a decision made by the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority, the operator of the airport, to wind down the event due to increasing “regional growth”. This year’s event will mark nearly 60 years of the annual race and associated air show.
The organizers are already searching for a new venue to keep what is one of the aviation world’s most exciting annual event alive.
“We are committed to finding a new location so that the event can continue,” said the board of directors in the letter. “In fact, we are currently exploring several other possible locations to host the event in the future…”. The board of directors went on the thank both the airport and its operator for the partnership they enjoyed over the past years.
