Engine Smoke Evacuates Dash-8

Oct. 10/13-The Jazz LLP (doing business as Air Canada Express) de Havilland DHC-8-301 (C-GKTA) was operating as flight JZA8486 from Edmonton, AB (CYEG) to Saskatoon, SK (CYXE). Ramp personnel observed smoke coming from the inboard side of No. 1 engine (Pratt and Whitney Canada PW123) nacelle during engine start and alerted flight crew. The flight crew carried out an engine shutdown and alerted the flight attendant. ARFF was called and a rapid deplanement was executed at the gate. Maintenance advised that the starter had remained engaged after start and subsequent shutdown. The No. 1 engine starter/generator, start contactor, and start control relay 8011-K5 were replaced. Engine speed sensing wiring from GCU was tested for continuity with no faults found. Aircraft starts and ground runs carried out. The aircraft has been returned to service.
