Transport minister Omar Alghabra announced earlier this week that the federal government “[envisions] net zero emissions by 2050 for the Canadian aviation sector.” In addition, the federal government is setting a goal of 10 percent usage of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
“Canada’s Aviation Climate Action Plan is a good example of how we can come together to set a net-zero emission vision and lay out the actions needed to get us on the right path,” said Alghabra in a written statement. At the 2021 climate conference held in Glasgow last year, Canada joined other countries in committing to submit to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) a plan to reduce aviation-related greenhouse gas emissions before the 41st International Civil Aviation Organization Assembly currently underway at ICAO’s Montreal headquarters.
