Transport Canada Temporarily Extends Some Maintenance Intervals

Transport Canada is giving operators of private aircraft a little leeway in getting scheduled inspections done during the pandemic. TC has amended regs to allow a little extra time for inspections due before Dec. 1. For instance, inspections required every 12 months can be stretched by 15 percent to up to 13.8 months. Out of phase inspections get an extra 10 percent in their normal duration. The relaxation of maintenance interval limits is not automatic, however.

An AME can use his or her discretion to let the extra time go by based on knowledge of the history and use of the aircraft and make the appropriate notes in the maintenance log. The owner or operator can also apply by email directly to Transport Canada for an extension but should be prepared to answer detailed questions about the aircraft and its use. There is no charge for the extension applications.
