Feds Invest in NWT Airports

Both Fort Simpson’s and Norman Wells’ airports will receive a combined $1.4 million in funding for ice and snow control assets through the federal Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).

Norman Wells will procure a snow blower costing $810,000 and Fort Simpson a grader costing $595,000. Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon was in Norman Wells on October 15 for the announcement.

“A strong Canada depends on strong northern transportation networks,” MacKinnon said. “This investment will help ensure the Norman Wells and Fort Simpson airports can continue operating through challenging winter conditions, keeping communities connected, supporting local economies and strengthening Canada’s North for years to come.”

The funding is in addition to the recent $8.8 million in ACAP funding provided to Norman Wells for runway improvements and a new runway sweeper. Fort Simpson also received recent ACAP funding to the tune if $3.3 million for airfield electrical upgrades and a snow plow.

“Reliable air service is a lifeline for families and businesses across the Northwest Territories, bringing in essential supplies and connecting people to the services they need,” Crown-Indigenous Relations minister Rebecca Alty added. “It’s about making sure northern communities can count on the transportation links they need to grow and thrive.”
